What to Wear to Yoga?

Whether you've recently discovered a passion for yoga or you're heading off to your very first class, deciding what to wear can sometimes be a challenge. As with any sport, wearing the right clothes can make a big difference. That's why it's important to find the right yoga wear that will help you stretch, bend and feel comfortable throughout your yoga session. Fortunately, there are yoga clothes to suit different yoga styles and different morphologies to make you a next-level yogi. Follow our advice and discover the must-have pieces in your yogi wardrobe! ✨

TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE DIFFERENT STYLES OF YOGA

As a beginner, you may not be aware that there are several different styles of yoga. The type of yoga you practice will influence the outfit you wear. For example, yoga Bikram or hot yoga classes are held in a heated room, which means you'll be sweating a lot. These detox sessions therefore require clothing designed to wick away moisture. 💦

If you're taking a beginners' class, it may be a Hatha yoga or Vinyasa yoga type class. These classes focus on coordinated movement and breathing, with Vinyasa being slightly faster and involving more intense stretching, leg lifting as well as inversions 🤸. Iyengar yoga, on the other hand, focuses on postures you'll hold for longer, allowing you to find your balance and deepen the stretch. This style of yoga also often uses props. There are also Power yoga and Ashtanga yoga classes, which involve constant movement between asanas, making them more challenging than other types of yoga.

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS FOR YOUR YOGA OUTFIT

The choice of yoga clothing is an important decision that can either enhance your yoga session, or get in the way and prevent you from enjoying your class to the full.

  • Dress to move:
To make sure you get the most out of your session, choose clothes that are flexible and allow freedom of movement while still covering you up. Opt for fitted, stretchy styles made from soft, breathable fabrics such as cotton, polyester or nylon. You can also treat yourself to a fashionable yoga outfit with a pretty pattern. The most important thing is to choose a comfortable outfit, so you don't get distracted during your yoga session.
  • Dress for the heat:

Most people sweat during class, especially during dynamic yoga classes, such as Ashtanga yoga or Bikram yoga 🔥. So you'll be more comfortable if you wear breathable clothing, which lets air in and wicks sweat away from your body. If you sweat a lot, you can also wear a headband to prevent sweat from dripping into your eyes and interfering with your vision.

WEAR A YOGA BRA OR SPORTS BRA

Brassière Yoga

Choosing a good sports bra is important for a successful yoga session, especially if you have a large bust. Whether you want to wear your bra under a top or on its own, it's essential to choose one that provides good chest support. You don't want your bra to slip off during your routines and reveal what's underneath, so make sure you choose a yoga bra that will stay securely in place in the upside-down dog position or during your inversions. 🤸

Soutien-gorge de sport

If you're about to do a dynamic yoga session, lightweight, V-neck or light-colored bras may not be the best option. It's also best to avoid bras with closures in the back. Some postures require you to lie on your back, so you don't want these fastenings to disturb you during your session, especially in a relaxation posture like savasana. The key is to wear a comfortable yoga bra that offers good support and that you feel comfortable in.

CHOOSE A YOGA TANK TOP OR T-SHIRT

Débardeur yoga

Tank tops are perfect for yoga, as they allow unrestricted arm movement. Yoga often requires upside-down or angled movements, so avoid wearing a tank top or t-shirt that's too baggy, as it won't stay in place during your routines. As well as revealing your belly (if you don't mind so much 👍), it can distract, hinder and even block your vision (in the head-down dog pose, for example 🐶).

To avoid this problem, choose well-fitting tank tops that stay in place during all your movements. A form-fitting tank top or t-shirt that's not too tight or constricting will be an excellent choice!

LONG-SLEEVED TOPS: SWEATERS, SWEATSHIRTS

Pull Yoga

As with tank tops and t-shirts, it's best to avoid long-sleeved tops which are too baggy. Instead, opt for a fitted garment that will stay in place with every inversion. Similarly, avoid anything with a very low neckline to ensure good coverage during class.

💡 If you still want to wear a fuller, long-sleeved top, consider combining it with a tank top underneath. This solution has certain advantages:

  • You'll stay covered if your top doesn't stay up.
  • You'll stay warm or cool during different parts of the course, either by wearing the long-sleeved top, or by removing it to reveal the tank top underneath.

CHOOSE A GOOD PAIR OF YOGA LEGGINGS

Legging Yoga

The yoga legging is an essential part of any yogi's wardrobe. Leggings are comfortable, stretchy and allow for a full range of movement. It will also be easier for your yoga teacher to check and correct your alignment. Just make sure you choose leggings with fast-drying fabric to soak up all your sweat and ensure a comfortable yoga session.

When it comes to length, you can choose long yoga leggings that stop at the ankles, shorter leggings that stop at mid-calf, or yoga leggings with underpants. It all depends on your preferences and the style of yoga you practice. In general, short leggings are best suited to hot yoga or Bikram yoga classes, while longer models are perfect for gentler classes like Yin yoga or Hatha yoga. 🧘

You can also opt for high-waisted yoga leggings. These leggings have the advantage of shaping your tummy, lengthening and refining your silhouette while ensuring you stay in place throughout your yoga session.

⚠️ Also note that thin or light-colored leggings can become transparent in certain postures, so thick leggings in darker shades guarantee better opacity.

TRY YOGA SHORTS

Short yoga

It's not always easy to get your hands on yoga shorts, but once you've found the perfect pair, you'll realize how invaluable they are, especially for your Bikram yoga classes.

Our tips for choosing the right yoga shorts:

  • Avoid short shorts and baggy shorts. Instead, choose shorts that will allow you to bend and contort with one leg in the air (as in the half-moon posture 🌙) without feeling exposed.
  • Also make sure your shorts don't bunch up when you move, otherwise you'll have to constantly pull them down.
  • Opt for fitted shorts (like cycling shorts) that end halfway up your thighs.

WATCHES, JEWELRY, SMARTWATCH and FITNESS TRACKER

You can wear any accessory you like, as long as it doesn't get in the way or distract others during your yoga class. If you want to wear a smartwatch or fitness device, just make sure you put it on silent mode so it doesn't beep during class. If you wear jewelry, watch out for it getting caught in your hair or clothing while you practice your yoga. ⌚

SHOULD YOU PRACTICE YOGA BAREFOOT?

yoga pieds nus

Yoga is generally practiced barefoot to enable your body to develop balance, adapt to uneven surfaces or simply grip the floor better. Of course, if you prefer not to be barefoot during class, you can always keep your socks on or wear socks specially designed for yoga! 👣

Points to remember:

  • Wear clothes that don't restrict your movements.
  • Choose leggings that stay opaque and dry quickly.
  • Choose well-fitting tops that don't fall over your face during the upside-down dog pose.
  • Choose yoga bras that offer good chest support.
  • Layer a long-sleeved top over a tank top so you can take it off when class gets intense or put it back on when you're cold.
  • For intensive classes like Bikram, wear fitted shorts that end at mid-thigh, like cycling shorts.
